Ex-South Korean President Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison for Corruption

Former President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the role that she played in a corruption scandal that culminated with her being impeached last year.

Judge Kim Se-yoon stated:

“The defendant abused her presidential power entrusted by the people, and as a result, brought massive chaos to the order of state affairs and led to the impeachment of the president, which was unprecedented”

In addition to the corruption and abuse of power charges, Geun-hye has been found guilty of bribery and coercion for colluding to receive $7 billion from Samsung and retail giant Lotte Group while demanding over $8 million from energy conglomerate, SK.

Apart from the time she will serve, Geun-hye has been fined $16.9 million.
