Now I’ll be the first to say that I am not the biggest fan of the FBI Director. However, it is very abnormal for the FBI Director to be dismissed for apparently no real reason at all. It is abnormal for the director to be fired since there has been no dubious dealings or legal wrongdoings committed by Comey. Especially since he is heading the agency who investigating the President’s ties to Russia.
What does this mean for us?
With the nuclear option having been changed for Supreme Court nominees and cabinet appointments, Trump could get the Congress to appoint whomever he wants to be the FBI Director with a simple majority of the Senate. Do I trust Republicans to put someone who will be independent and will stand up to Trump? Only Senator McCain so far has pressed for a special prosecutor to handle these cases involving Trump, his campaign, and Russia, so no.
I don’t trust the Republicans in the Senate to handle this and neither should you.
Others are comparing this to when Richard Nixon dismissed those leading investigations against him that led to the Watergate scandal. While it is too early to see, the parallels are certainly interesting. The FBI investigations will continue and in due time, we will see if any wrongdoing was done by Trump or his campaign. For now, all you should know is: this is not normal.
