GOP’s Healthcare Debacle

In the past days and weeks we have seen how truly disorganized the Republicans in Congress are. Even with full control of the House, Senate, and the White House they appear unable to pass an Obamacare replacement. This is due to two warring factions in the Republican Party: the moderates versus the conservatives. While Republicans overall since the 1980s have become much more conservative, there are still pockets of moderates in the northeast and out west. They do makeup a non-insignificant amount of the Republicans in Congress. The current Senate plan has aspects that both groups of Republicans do not like: keeping some patient protections and healthcare regulations (conservatives do not like this), and cutting funding to Medicaid (moderates do not like this). This is of course, a broad generalization.

In addition to the moderate-conservative split, you have Trump and the White House sending mixed messages and complicating matters further. Does this mean Obamacare and over 20 million Americans are safe from being thrown off their healthcare plans?

No.

On the contrary, we’ve seen what Republicans in the House did after they failed to pass their initial plan. They tweaked it in secrecy and forced it through. Republicans in the Senate are bound to find a way to pass a repeal and replacement eventually.

So what can we do to hold their feet to the fire and possibly stop the bill?

Call them.

If you live in a state that has a Republican Senator, you need to hound them. Leave them messages. Tell your story if you or a loved one will be negatively impacted by this bill. Now before you think ‘That’s too much work!’ it doesn’t even take a few minutes of your time.

Call the United States Capitol Switchboard at: (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senator’s office. I’ve done it, will you?
