Team USA men’s basketball three day mini camp is under way his week in Vegas. This starts a new chapter in USA men’s basketball. This is the first camp for coach Gregg Popovich. He takes over for Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski who coached the team from 2005-2016 finishing with a record of 88-1.
Thirty-five players received invites for this weeks camp. Some participated, and others all though present elected to sit out the workouts. For example, Kyrie Irving decided to sit out the camp as he still recovers from the knee infection that end his season.
The big question heading into the mini camp was the status of Kwahi Leonard and would he attend? This week The Raptors announced that Leonard pasted his physical making the recent trade official. Kwahi decided to skip the mini camp avoid what would have been a guaranteed media circus, with Demar DeRozan being there the guy he was traded for, and his former coach Gregg Popovich there running the show.
This mini camp is going to be a short gathering of potential team USA players. Some scrimmages and light workouts are planned, along with some media availability before concluding on Friday.
